5- Lexington Avenue White Plains Road Express
The
5-Lexington Avenue Express is a train in the IRT division of
New York Subway. It operates from Dyre Avenue in the Eastchester section of the
Bronx to Bowling Green in lower
Manhattan. During weekday peak hours, it is extended to
Brooklyn College in Flatbush,
Brooklyn. Limited rush hour service is available on the White Plainn Road elevated branch to Nereid Avenue in Wakefield.
In Manhattan, the 5 runs express with the 4, skipping the local stops for the 6 and stopping at 125 Street (Harlem), 86 Street, 42 Street-Grand Central Terminal, 14 Street, and Brooklyn Bridge.
Much of the 5's car fleet was made up of Redbird cars built in the mid 1950s and very early 1960s, these cars were retired by 2002.
