A Soldier's Story is a

African-American officer who investigates a racially-charged murder on an Army base during
World War II. It stars Howard Rollins, Adolph Caesar, David Alan Grier, Robert Townsend,
Denzel Washington,
Patti LaBelle and Wings Hauser.
The movie was adapted by Charles Fuller from his play, A Soldier's Play. It was directed by Norman Jewison.
It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Adolph Caesar), Best Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.
