According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,548 km² (1,370 mi²). 3,534 km² (1,365 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.40% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,476 people, 1,421 households, and 1,031 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 1,982 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.29% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 1.41% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.92% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,421 households out of which 28.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.30% are married couples living together, 5.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.83.
