Adams County, North Dakota

Adams County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 2,593. Its name is in honor of the sixth President of the United States, John Quincy Adams. Its county seat is Hettinger6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,561 km² (989 mi²). 2,559 km² (988 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,593 people, 1,121 households, and 725 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 1,416 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.50% White, 0.54% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,121 households out of which 26.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 5.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.30% are non-families. 32.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 4.10% from 18 to 24, 21.70% from 25 to 44, 27.00% from 45 to 64, and 24.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 91.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,079, and the median income for a family is $34,306. Males have a median income of $23,073 versus $18,714 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,425. 10.40% of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.10% are under the age of 18 and 11.10% are 65 or older.
