Addison County is a county located in the U.S. State of Vermont. As of 2000, the population is 35,974. Its county seat is Middlebury6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,093 km² (808 mi²). 1,995 km² (770 mi²) of it is land and 99 km² (38 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.72% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 35,974 people, 13,068 households, and 9,108 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (47/mi²). There are 15,312 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.86% White, 0.54% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,068 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.40% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 12.50% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,142, and the median income for a family is $49,351. Males have a median income of $31,836 versus $24,416 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,539. 8.60% of the population and 5.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.10% are under the age of 18 and 8.00% are 65 or older.
