Áireacht
Áireacht: The name of the
cabinet or
ministry in the
Dáil Constitution passed by the
First Dáil of the Irish Republic in January 1919. Consisted of a
Priomh Áire (or prime minister, also called 'President of Dáil Éireann') and ministers. The Príomh Áire was upgraded to
President of the Republic (ie, full head of state) by a constitutional amendment proposed by
Eamon de Valera and adopted by
Dáil Éireann in August 1921.
The Áireacht and the entire republican system of government was replaced by the Irish Free State in 1922.
