Aizoanthemum Carpobrotus Dorotheanthus Lampranthus Mesembryanthemum Schlechteranthus |
The Aizoaceae are a family of plants of the order Caryophyllales. They are commonly known as the stone plants or carpet weeds. An earlier systematic name for the family was Ficoideae.
There are over 100 genera of Aizoaceae, and around 1100 species are recognised. Most plants of this family come from southern Africa, but they are also found in tropical Africa and Asia, Australia, California and South America. A few species (especially the Ice Plant, Carpobrotus edulis), have been widely introduced and have become an ecological problem.
The plants tend to be succulent. Most reproduce hermaphroditically.
