History
\nA railroad used to run through Akron and there was a railroad station in the town. The railroad is now gone, but along the old site of the railroad remnants of the tracks can still be found, such as railroad ties.
Law and Government
\nAkron borough is an independent local government unit located in Lancaster County. It is run by an elected borough council and an elected mayor.
Geography
\nAkron is located at 40°9'23" North, 76°12'14" West (40.156472, -76.204000)1.
The borough is located on a hill. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Economy
\nThe economy is mostly made up of small businesses. There are very few large businesses because the town is small and mostly residential. The largest business is the non-profit Mennonite Central Committee, which has its headquarters in the town.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,046 people, 1,622 households, and 1,138 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,239.8/km² (3,199.8/mi²). There are 1,687 housing units at an average density of 516.9/km² (1,334.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 96.42% White, 0.54% African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 2.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,622 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 24.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the borough the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough is $45,407, and the median income for a family is $53,365. Males have a median income of $37,061 versus $24,545 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $19,983. 4.6% of the population and 3.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.9% are under the age of 18 and 8.1% are 65 or older.
