Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 41.6 km² (16.1 mi²). 41.1 km² (15.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.18% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 40,852 people, 16,108 households, and 10,808 families residing in the city. The population density is 993.3/km² (2,571.8/mi²). There are 17,374 housing units at an average density of 422.4/km² (1,093.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.68% White, 0.53% African American, 1.22% Native American, 1.14% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 2.65% from other races, and 2.56% from two or more races. 6.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 16,108 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.99.
