The Festival was founded in 1948 by the composers Sir Benjamin Britten and Eric Crozier and the singer Sir Peter Pears. Several of Britten's operas were premiered at the festival, including A Midsummer Night's Dream (1960) and Death in Venice (1973). Harrison Birtwistle's Punch and Judy was also first heard there in 1968.
