Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter
Warning: Wikipedia contains spoilers
Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter is a series of dark fantasy/alternate history novels by Laurell K. Hamilton, narrated in first person hard-boiled detective style by the title character, Anita Blake. Anita lives in a fictional Saint Louis much like our own, save that, not only are things like vampires, werewolves and ghosts real, but everyone knows that they're real. Living in a world where the supernatural doesn't hide itself, Anita herself is neck-deep among Things That Go Bump in the Night:
- Since she has a natural affinity for the dead, her day job (so to speak) is as a re-animator, working for Animators, Inc. People hire her to animate corpses into zombies so they can ask the departed questions, like "Who killed you?" or "Did you really write this will?"
- Having a Bachelor of Science in preternatural biology, she is on retainer as consultant with the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team of the Saint Louis Police (otherwise known as "The Spook Squad").
- She is the licensed vampire killer in the state of Missouri. Ever since the United States Supreme Court granted vampires civil rights, a warrant is required to kill a vampire, and the only person who can carry out such a warrant is someone who is licensed to do so. In the United States, Anita is the human with the most legal vampire kills, and is known among vampires as "The Executioner".
With these three different jobs, Anita has plenty of opportunities for running into supernatural trouble.
