Plot outline

During the first book in the trilogy, which is called simply Artemis Fowl, Butler disarmed a LEPRetrieval squad. Using the technology from their helmets, Artemis has built a tiny computer - the C Cube, the "cube that sees everything". He plans to show the C Cube to Jon Spiro. During their meeting, Spiro outwits Artemis by hiding assassins in the restaurant where they are having lunch. Butler sets off a fairy grenade, but Arno Blunt escapes and attacks Artemis. Butler takes the bullet and a long and heartwrenching death scene follows, during which Butler reveals his first name - Domovoi. However, Artemis isn't prepared to just let him go - he freezes Butler cryogenically until Holly arrives to heal him.

Then things get really crazy. The healing goes wrong and Butler is left mutilated, with Kevlar fibres embedded in his chest - and he's now fifteen years older. Now fifty-five, he is unable to fulfil his capacity as a bodyguard. His little sister takes over as humans and fairies mount a huge operation to get the C Cube away from Spiro before he uses it against the fairies, culminating in a dramatic, second-by-second engineered infiltration of Spiro's office block, the Spiro Needle, by Juliet, Holly and Mulch.
