Australia v England;

The much awaited Ashes series began on Thursday 5th July 2001.
I attempted to give a day by day report on the events.

Day 1;

Australia won the toss and elected to field. Half way through the first day, England had been reduced to 136 for 4, but an excellent last wicket partnership carried them to 294 all out.

Australia replied late in the day to finish at 2 for 133 off 22 overs mainly due to a magnificent unbeaten 76 off 78 balls by M.Slater

Day 2;

Despite losing Slater early, splendid batting by the Waugh twins and Martyn left Australia 332/4 when bad light stopped play, a useful lead with wickets in hand. Steve Waugh hit an unbeaten century.

Day 3;

Steve waugh got out early but Martyn & Gilchrist both hammered the England attack & Australia posted a magnificent total of 576. At stumps England were 1 for 48 & in deep trouble.

Day 4;

After some token resistance from Trescothick & Butcher England folded to be all out for 164 giving Australia victory by an innings & 118 runs with a day to spare.
