Grace Episcopal Church, formerly of Elizabeth Street, is believed to be the first church in the United States to use electric lighting.
The village has a public school district named after it; it has one high school, one middle school, one junior high school, and five elementary schools.
A number of parochial schools are also located in Baldwinsville.
The Seneca River Day festival (formerly the John McHarrie Day festival) occurs in July; it features an anything that floats race, which encourages entrants to build a floating vehicle without spending more than a set amount (currently $50).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 8.4 km² (3.2 mi²). 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.23% water.
The Seneca River flows through the village, through the historic downtown area. The Erie Canal also passes through Baldwinsville; its 24th lock sports a local restaurant.
There are 2,801 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the village the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $40,143, and the median income for a family is $51,549. Males have a median income of $37,259 versus $25,740 for females. The per capita income for the village is $19,817. 8.2% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. As of the census of 2000, there are 7,053 people, 2,801 households, and 1,837 families residing in the village. The population density is 884.1/km² (2,291.7/mi²). There are 2,924 housing units at an average density of 366.5/km² (950.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.87% White, 0.75% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
