The Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant was attacked in a pre-dawn confederate assault on Fort Steadman by the confederate troops, led by General Robert E. Lee. The confederates manage to drive back the garrison of the fort. But a series of counter attacks leads to a turning of events. Lee's army loses the battle and receives a severe blow, antecipating the loss of Petersburg.
