Overview
Historical significance
The Southern Song Dynasty eastablished a joint system of defense with Xiangyang (襄陽) against the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, which proved successful as Mongke Khan died of illness in Sichuan. The line of defence was finally broken through after the first use of firearm in history during the six years siege of Xiangyang.

A significant battle led to the fall of Xiangyang following a siege which lasted from 1268 to 1273.
Geography around the city
The terrain made the traditional use of cavalry by the Mongols very difficult as they had to capture walled cities and suffer the threat of Song naval power.
