Belorussian
Belorussian also spelt
Belarusian, Byelorussian and
Belarussian the name given to the distinct group of slavs who inhabit present day
Belarus between
Poland and
Russia,
Lithuania and
Ukraine. The prefix "Belo" can be translated into 'White' so these people are sometimes called
White Russians though not to be confused with the pre-Soviet political group of Russians with the same name. While only a state briefly after the First World War the Belarusian people trace their distinct culture to the
Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Rus' and Samogitia.
