The district was established in 1969 by merging the former districts of Bernkastel and Wittlich.
The district is situated on both banks of the Moselle River, which crosses the territory from southwest to northeast. On either sides the country is rising to the mountain chains of the Eifel in the north and the Hunsrück in the south. A great number of affluents come from the Eifel mountains and join the Moselle River. In the very south of the district there is the Erbeskopf (818 m), the highest peak of the Hunsrück and of Rhineland-Palatinate.History
