Bird Island, Minnesota

Bird Island is a city located on U.S. Highway 212 in Renville County, Minnesota about an hour and a half drive west of Minneapolis-St. Paul.

The city is named for a nearby sixty-acre island. At one time, the island was surrounded by sloughs and covered with many huge, beautiful trees, which were a refuge for thousands of birds. After the installation of ditches and tile, the island became farmland and is no longer an island.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²). 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,195 people, 499 households, and 303 families residing in the city. The population density is 299.6/km² (773.6/mi²). There are 530 housing units at an average density of 132.9/km² (343.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.82% White, 0.00% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 2.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 499 households out of which 28.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% are married couples living together, 5.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 35.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 101.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $38,092, and the median income for a family is $48,750. Males have a median income of $31,063 versus $23,056 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,700. 8.1% of the population and 4.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.7% are under the age of 18 and 12.5% are 65 or older.
