The Bjørnøya island (Bear Island) in the Arctic ocean is a part of Svalbard. It is located at 78° north, 19° east and has a total area of 178 km². The highest point on the island is Miseryfjellet at 536 meters.
As of 2003, the only population on the island is the staff of a Norwegian meteorological station.
A nature reserve covers all of the island, except 1.2 km² around the meteorological station: the reserve also stretches 4 nautical miles into the ocean. The island is important for a number of birds, among them the guillemot.
