\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,367 people, 4,430 households, and 3,313 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (30/mi²). There are 5,142 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.44% White, 3.70% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,430 households out of which 31.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.50% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.20% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 31.30% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who are 65 years of age or older.
