Brownsville is a city located in Edmonson County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 921. It is the county seat of Edmonson County6.

census of 2000, there are 921 people, 387 households, and 229 families residing in the city. The population density is 223.6/km² (581.0/mi²). There are 421 housing units at an average density of 102.2/km² (265.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.37% White, 0.11% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 387 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.6% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% are non-families. 37.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.81. In the city the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 72.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.1 males.
