Brunswick, Georgia

Brunswick is a city located in Glynn County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,600. The city is the county seat of Glynn County6.

Geography

\nBrunswick is located at 31°9'32" North, 81°29'21" West (31.158777, -81.489252)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 65.2 km² (25.2 mi²). 44.6 km² (17.2 mi²) of it is land and 20.7 km² (8.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 31.68% water.

Demographics

As of the
census of 2000, there are 15,600 people, 6,085 households, and 3,681 families residing in the city. The population density is 349.8/km² (906.0/mi²). There are 6,952 housing units at an average density of 155.9/km² (403.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 36.41% White, 59.81% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.73% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 5.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,085 households out of which 29.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.4% are married couples living together, 24.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,272, and the median income for a family is $28,564. Males have a median income of $26,172 versus $18,602 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,062. 30.4% of the population and 25.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 43.9% are under the age of 18 and 21.7% are 65 or older.

1991 plane crash

An Atlantic Southeast Airlines Embraer EMB 120 plane crashed in Brunswick on April 5, 1991 due to propeller control failure[1] . The crash claimed the lives of all 23 people on board, including Texas Senator John Tower, astronaut Sonny Carter, and golfer Davis Love, Sr
