CAMERAMAN
The person in charge of photography using a motion picture camera.
Historically a male person but lightweight modern equipment has created opportunities for more women than previously.
Frequently the term "Director Of Photography" is used. Sometimes abbreviated to "DOP" or just "DP".
A DOP may actually operate the camera or, on more complex shoots, may have a large crew to administer. In which case the DOP is crucially involved in Lighting rather than actually handling the camera.
A typical Camera Crew might consist of:
the DOP
an OPERATOR
a FOCUS PULLER
a CLAPPER LOADER
an ASSISTANT
The DOP could also be in charge of a Lighting Crew and Grips Crew.
The Lighting Crew might consist of:
Chief Electrician or GAFFER
Assistant Chief Electric or BEST BOY
Electricians
and Assistants.
The GRIPS CREW consists of:
KEY GRIP
DOLLY GRIP
GRIPSMAN
ASSISTANT GRIP
A GRIP generally handles the camera when it is being moved or placed or positioned for a shot.
The GRIP is responsible for carrying the tripod, putting the camera on it and pushing the dolly or operating the camera crane.
Hence the terms KEY GRIP (Boss of the Grips), DOLLY GRIP (a specialist in using a wheeled camera platform called a DOLLY)
