\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 900 km² (348 mi²). 883 km² (341 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.89% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 56,742 people, 23,486 households, and 16,346 families residing in the county. The population density is 64/km² (166/mi²). There are 25,920 housing units at an average density of 29/km² (76/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.49% White, 1.00% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 23,486 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.83.
In the county, the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $27,371, and the median income for a family is $33,825. Males have a median income of $26,394 versus $19,687 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,678. 16.90% of the population and 12.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.00% are under the age of 18 and 16.00% are 65 or older.
