Chenega, Alaska

Chenega is a town located in Valdez-Cordova Census Area, Alaska, along Prince William Sound. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town was 86, largely consisting of Chugach Native Americans. Chenega was largely destroyed in a 1969 tidal wave and the population suffered following the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. In 1982, Larry Evanoff moved to Evans Island and between 1984-1991 ~26 other families migrated to New Chenega. \n

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 75.5 km² (29.1 mi²). 74.6 km² (28.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water.

There are 27 housing units at an average density of 0.4/km² (0.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 22.09% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 73.26% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 4.65% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 22 households out of which 40.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.6% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.2% are non-families. 13.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.55 and the average family size is 3.83. In the town the population is spread out with 33.7% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 5.8% who are 65 years of age or older.
