Clanton is a city located in Chilton County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 7,800. The city is the county seat of Chilton County.

Geography

\nClanton is located at 32°50'23.316" North, 86°37'41.477" West (32.839810, -86.628188). According to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 52.7 km² (20.4 mi²). 52.6 km² (20.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water.

Demographics

census2 of 2000, there are 7,800 people, 3,168 households, and 2,128 families residing in the city. The population density is 148.2/km² (383.8/mi²). There are 3,510 housing units at an average density of 66.7/km² (172.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.31% White, 20.01% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 2.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,168 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 16.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.93. In the city the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $30,394, and the median income for a family is $37,568. Males have a median income of $32,484 versus $20,344 for females.
