\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,522 km² (974 mi²). 2,494 km² (963 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.09% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,390 people, 7,641 households, and 5,402 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (21/mi²). There are 9,431 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.79% White, 14.80% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 10.04% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races. 19.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,641 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.30% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the county, the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 23.80% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 18.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $32,425, and the median income for a family is $41,388. Males have a median income of $30,063 versus $20,014 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,910. 16.20% of the population and 12.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.00% are under the age of 18 and 15.80% are 65 or older.
