Cumberland County, North Carolina

Cumberland County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 302,963. Its county seat is Fayetteville6.

History

The county was formed in 1754 from Bladen County. It was named for Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), captain-general of the British army and victorious commander at the Battle of Culloden.

In 1771 parts of Cumberland County, Johnston County, and Orange County were combined to form Wake County. In July 1784 the western part of Cumberland County became Moore County; the eastern part became Fayette County in honor of the Marquis de la Fayette, but the name Cumberland County was restored three months later. In 1855 the northern part of Cumberland County became Harnett County. Finally, in 1911 parts of Cumberland County and Robeson County were combined to form Hoke County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,705 km² (658 mi²). 1,691 km² (653 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.87% water.

The county is divided into eleven townships: Beaver Dam, Black River, Carvers Creek, Cedar Creek, Cross Creek, Eastover, Grays Creek, Manchester, Pearces Mill, Rockfish, and Seventy-First.

census2 of 2000, there are 302,963 people, 107,358 households, and 77,619 families residing in the county. The population density is 179/km² (464/mi²). There are 118,425 housing units at an average density of 70/km² (181/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 55.15% White, 34.90% Black or African American, 1.55% Native American, 1.88% Asian, 0.30% Pacific Islander, 3.13% from other races, and 3.09% from two or more races. 6.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 107,358 households out of which 39.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.90% are married couples living together, 15.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 13.70% from 18 to 24, 32.90% from 25 to 44, 17.80% from 45 to 64, and 7.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 102.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,466, and the median income for a family is $41,459. Males have a median income of $28,308 versus $22,379 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,376. 12.80% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.80% are under the age of 18 and 13.70% are 65 or older.
