Darjeeling tea is traditionally prized above all other black tea, especially in the UK and the countries comprising the former British Empire.
Adulteration and falsification are serious problems in global tea trade; the amount of tea sold worldwide as Darjeeling every year exceeds 40,000 t, while the annual tea production of Darjeeling is estimated at 8,000 to 11,000 t, including local consumption. To combat this situation, the Tea Board of India administers the Darjeeling certification mark and logo.
