He was drafted eight overall by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. His first game was on October 12, 1991 where he collected his first goal. Hatcher played with the Minnesota franchise until it was moved to Dallas in 1993. There he played with the Dallas Stars for 10 years where he was named Captain, collecting 71 goals, 223 assists, 1,380 penalty minutes, and one Stanley Cup victory in 1999 in his career with the Stars. In July 2003, Hatcher signed with the Detroit Red Wings for a five-year $30 million contract.
