\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,334 km² (2,446 mi²). 5,964 km² (2,303 mi²) of it is land and 370 km² (143 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.85% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,972 people, 1,863 households, and 1,386 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 2,133 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 24.15% White, 0.03% Black or African American, 74.16% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,863 households out of which 43.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.90% are married couples living together, 22.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.60% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.15 and the average family size is 3.66.
In the county, the population is spread out with 38.90% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 16.60% from 45 to 64, and 8.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.00 males.
