Dumbarton
Dumbarton is a
town in
Scotland, lying on the north bank of the
River Clyde. It is dominated by Dumbarton Castle, which was founded by the
Romans and has been rebuilt countless times since. It was the capital of the ancient
kingdom of
Strathclyde. It is currently the administrative centre of the
West Dunbartonshire local authority.
In more recent times, the town became a centre for shipbuilding, and is the birthplace of David Byrne from the Talking Heads, and the motor-racing driver Jackie Stewart.
The town has a population of roughly 20,000.
