Mitchell obtained a Doctor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. He also has two Bachelor of Science degrees, one from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and one from Carnegie Mellon University. He was awarded honorary doctorates from the New Mexico State University, the University of Akron, Carnegie Mellon University and Embry-Riddle University. He began training at NASA in 1966 and served in the US Navy between 1962 and 1972.
Mitchell's academic interests include consciousness and paranormal phenomena. In 1974, he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences. The aim of the nonprofit Institute is to conduct and sponsor research into areas that mainstream science has ignored, including psychic events.
As well as writing academic journals, Mitchell has written two books; Psychic Exploration (ISBN 0399113428) and The Way of the Explorer (ISBN 157270019X).
