Edina, Minnesota

Edina is a city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, situated immediately southwest of Minneapolis.

History

Edina values its history. The Baird and Grimes homes and Country Club District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Grange Hall and Cahill School, owned by the City and located across from City Hall in Tupa Park, are also on the Register.

Employment

Major employers in the City include Fairview Southdale Hospital, Jerry’s Enterprises, Golden Valley Microwave Foods, Health Risk Management, Wells Fargo Funding Co., Nash Finch Co., International Dairy Queen, Roach Organization and Techpower.

Shopping

Edina has numerous retail shopping centers, including Southdale Center, the first climate-controlled, fully enclosed mall in the United States. Other shopping centers include Galleria, Yorktown and Centennial Lakes Plaza. The City also boasts a thriving downtown area at 50th Street and France Avenue, known simply as “50th & France.”

Hotels

There is just one hotel in Edina, Marriott Residence Inn, adjacent to Edinborough Park. One of Edina’s crown jewels, Edinborough is a multi-use development that also includes an indoor park.

Geography

Many major highways run through or are close to Edina, making it readily accessible to all within the metropolitan area. Minnesota State Highways 62 and 100 divide the City into four sections. Minnesota Highway 169 and Minnesota Highway 100 extend north and south. Interstate Highway 494 and Minnesota Highway 62 extend east and west. Minnesota Highway 7 is within three miles of the City. Interstate Highway 394 is within five miles.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 41.5 km² (16.0 mi²). 40.8 km² (15.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.87% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 47,425 people, 20,996 households, and 12,870 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,162.6/km² (3,011.4/mi²). There are 21,669 housing units at an average density of 531.2/km² (1,376.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.28% White, 1.15% African American, 0.13% Native American, 2.99% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 20,996 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $66,019, and the median income for a family is $93,496. Males have a median income of $67,011 versus $41,742 for females. The per capita income for the city is $44,195. 3.3% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.6% are under the age of 18 and 2.8% are 65 or older.
