Exmore is a town located in Northampton County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,136.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 1,136 people, 475 households, and 317 families residing in the town. The population density is 541.5/km² (1,405.5/mi²). There are 524 housing units at an average density of 249.8/km² (648.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 62.85% White, 33.80% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.23% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 2.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 475 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.1% are married couples living together, 21.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 28.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.95. In the town the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $31,343, and the median income for a family is $34,816. Males have a median income of $25,234 versus $19,350 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,305. 19.6% of the population and 16.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.0% are under the age of 18 and 11.5% are 65 or older.
