2. A combined Axis counter-partisan operation launched in late January, 1942 throughout Croatia. Nine Axis divisions (six German, three Italian) along with two Croat divisions and a number of Chetnik and Ustashi formations killed about eight thousand Partisans, capturing another two thousand.
Despite these losses, the Partisan formations were able to breakout from the encirclement and continue operations. Operation Weiss II followed in February; Operation Weiss III was launched in March. The next major operation in Yugoslavia was Operation Schwarz.
Fall Weiss translates as Case White following the German military's naming convention at the time.
