Falls of Saint Anthony
The
Falls of Saint Anthony, near the downtown area of
Minneapolis, Minnesota constituted the highest
waterfall on the
Mississippi River until it was replaced by a series of dams during the 19th century. They became known to the world beyond the
indigenous people who lived in their vicinity in the
17th century when they were observed by Father
Louis Hennepin, who also brought the existence of
Niagara Falls to the world's attention.
