census of 2000, there are 929 people, 420 households, and 275 families residing in the town. The population density is 222.8/km² (575.6/mi²). There are 473 housing units at an average density of 113.4/km² (293.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.20% White, 1.83% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 420 households out of which 21.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.78. In the town the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 24.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.4 males.
