He was MP for North Warwickshire from 1983 to 1992, serving as a junior minister, but lost his seat. He was re-elected in 1997 to another seat, and became Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer under William Hague. He is now a backbencher, and managed Michael Portillo's bid for the leadership of the Tory Party in 2001.
He is the son of Angus Maude, a Tory minister himself.
