Galati
Galaţi is a city in eastern
Romania, on the banks of the
Danube. It has a population of appr. 350,000, making it Romania's 5th largest city. The city has petroleum refineries, a large iron and steel plant, and the country's largest shipyard. Galaţi has a university (The Dunarea de Jos (Lower
Danube) University of Galati), founded 1948, given university status 1974, and a teacher-training college as well as a host of other educational and cultural institutions. Notable buildings include the 17th-century cathedral of
St. George (Sfîntu Georghe).
