Gateshead
Gateshead is an urban area and a metropolitan borough of north-east
England on the south side of the
River Tyne opposite
Newcastle upon Tyne, in the County of
Durham.
It used to be administrated as a part of the metropolitan county of
Tyne and Wear from 1974 until 1986. The metropolitan district (including not just the pre-1974 borough of Gateshead but also the former urban districts of Felling, Blaydon, Ryton and Whickham and the northernmost part of the former Chester-le-Street rural district) has some 190,000 inhabitants. Gateshead has the biggest shopping centre in U.K.
Gateshead is on the Tyne and Wear Metro.
