The city's recent growth began in the mid-1980s, when Toyota built its first wholly-owned United States plant north of the city. The plant, which currently builds the Camry and Avalon, opened in 1988.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.5 km² (13.7 mi²). 35.5 km² (13.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census of 2000, there are 18,080 people, 6,703 households, and 4,618 families residing in the city. The population density is 508.8/km² (1,317.5/mi²). There are 7,209 housing units at an average density of 202.9/km² (525.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.68% White, 8.01% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 1.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,703 households out of which 38.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.97.
In the city the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 16.1% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who are 65 years of age or older.
