Gifhorn
Gifhorn is a city in
Germany. It is located in
Lower Saxony, close to
Hannover,
Celle, and
Wolfsburg, near the
Aller and
Ise rivers. Gifhorn has about 40 000 inhabitants, and is capital of the district
Gifhorn.
Gifhorn was first mentioned in 1196, when it was located at the crossing of two important merchant routes, one transporting salt between Lüneburg and Braunschweig, the other transporting corn between Celle and Magdeburg.
