\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 12,421 km² (4,796 mi²). 12,348 km² (4,768 mi²) of it is land and 73 km² (28 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 51,335 people, 20,140 households, and 14,098 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (11/mi²). There are 28,189 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.82% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 12.92% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 6.59% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. 16.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 20,140 households out of which 26.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 22.30% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 19.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $30,917, and the median income for a family is $36,593. Males have a median income of $31,579 versus $22,315 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,315. 17.40% of the population and 12.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.90% are under the age of 18 and 7.90% are 65 or older.
