The movie is loosely based on the life of the deranged
Roman emperor Commodus (ruled between 180-192 AD, played by Phoenix), who scandalized Roman society by appearing in the
Colosseum as a
gladiator.
His father, emperor Marcus Aurelius appears in the film as a character played by Richard Harris.
The sound track was composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard.
