\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,226 km² (859 mi²). 2,211 km² (854 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,928 people, 2,644 households, and 1,975 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 3,426 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.62% White, 4.82% Black or African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 10.05% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. 35.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,644 households out of which 33.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.10% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.30% are non-families. 22.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the county, the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 17.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 98.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $34,201, and the median income for a family is $40,446. Males have a median income of $30,954 versus $20,028 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,126. 16.40% of the population and 11.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.70% are under the age of 18 and 11.10% are 65 or older.
