Grants is a city located in Cibola County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,806. It is the county seat of Cibola County6.

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.4 km² (13.7 mi²). 35.4 km² (13.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 8,806 people, 3,202 households, and 2,321 families residing in the city. The population density is 248.7/km² (644.4/mi²). There are 3,626 housing units at an average density of 102.4/km² (265.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 56.18% White, 1.62% African American, 11.97% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 24.80% from other races, and 4.38% from two or more races. 52.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,202 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% are married couples living together, 17.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.06. In the city the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $30,652, and the median income for a family is $33,464. Males have a median income of $31,870 versus $20,808 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,053. 21.9% of the population and 19.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.8% are under the age of 18 and 11.1% are 65 or older.
