Grenora, North Dakota

Grenora is a city located in Williams County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 202.

The city's motto is, "Friendliness lives here - you'll be a stranger only once." The city is home to a senior citizen's center, a golf club, bowling alley, restaurant, apartment buildings and community built low-income housing. There are also three churches, the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, St. Boniface Catholic Church, and a United Methodist Church. The town posseses only one Bar.

The surrounding area is home to exceptional small game, pronghorn antelope, and deer hunting opportunities. Available in the nearby Missouri River are paddlefish, a prehistoric fish which can weigh more than 120 pounds, and this is one of the only places the fish can be found on the North American continent. Grenora is located 30 miles from the Canadian border and only 4 miles from North Dakora's border with Montana.

Attractions

Grenora is home to the Writing Rock State Historical Site. The Assiniboine, Lakota, and Plains Chippewa Indian tribes often returned to the Spirit Rock, or Hoi-waukon, located on a hilly prairie just outside of Grenora. The rock served to mark a spot where Native Americans felt they could foretell the future. The two granite rocks at this site are covered with petryglyphs presumably carved by ancient Plains Indians.

Grenora is located at 48°37'5" North, 103°56'12" West (48.618147, -103.936657)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 202 people, 98 households, and 58 families residing in the city. The population density is 132.2/km² (342.7/mi²). There are 139 housing units at an average density of 91.0/km² (235.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.02% White, 0.00% African American, 0.99% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 98 households out of which 17.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% are married couples living together, 3.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.8% are non-families. 39.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.76.

In the city the population is spread out with 18.3% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 29.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 124.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 126.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,250, and the median income for a family is $37,083. Males have a median income of $31,750 versus $15,625 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,960. 4.2% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 0.0% are under the age of 18 and 9.6% are 65 or older.
