Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,257 people, 569 households, and 326 families residing in the town. The population density is 453.6/km² (1,172.8/mi²). There are 635 housing units at an average density of 229.1/km² (592.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 60.54% White, 38.90% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. 0.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 569 households out of which 20.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.6% are married couples living together, 18.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% are non-families. 40.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.75.
